“Just Because You’re a Star Doesn’t Mean You’re Stylish!”

On a crisp November morning at exactly 9:49am, Dyandra Brown, [now] Spelman graduate and self proclaimed stylista, brought the fashion world just what it was missing. The Nine Forty Nine (949) is every girl’s guide to how to be a fashion statement and not a mere passing trend — the 411 on fashion if you will. Ms. Brown has been immersed in all things fashion from an early age, beginning in her mother’s boutique JME Fashion Trends in Philadelphia, PA. It was these early interactions that cultivated a love of styling, consulting and just all things fly. The 949 began as a creative outlet and it has quickly blossomed into a must-read. With recent accomplishments like attending the BET Honors Awards, this is a blog that has boldly taken its position center stage. Get comfortable ladies…The 949 is going to be here for a while!

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always wondered whether bloggers read other blogs besides their own or if there’s some unwritten rule/unspoken rivalry that forbids such behavior. Dyandra admits that while she used to frequent other blogs, she soon began to feel like they were too focused on celeb-life and scandal. The little attention that was given to fashion was again centered on the fact that it was worn by such and such and therefore must be hot! Wrong! “Just because you’re a star doesn’t mean you’re stylish!” Her words, not mine…but I couldn’t have put it better myself. While The Nine Forty Nine is not absent of celebrity influence, after all, they’re the ones rocking the latest and hottest designs, you can guarantee there’s plenty there for the “everyday girl” without a million dollar budget.

When asked what’s next for The Nine Forty Nine, Dyandra confidently replied that she’d like to start her own company that umbrellas the original website, a fashion consulting firm, and a line of boutiques. At the moment, Ms. Brown is holding down the fort by herself, but she’s looking for contributors who are creative, possess strong writing skills and of course who know their way around a look book or two. A real life superwoman? You bet!
