Kalana Greene was the star of the final game in the Big East Tournament match as she had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Her 3 assists helped the No. 1-ranked Huskies (33-0) to maintain their lead in the tournament. It was their 72nd straight victory. This in itself is an N.C.A.A. women’s record. Besides, she helped her team to win their third straight conference championship. In the last 22 years the Huskies have won 16 Big East Tournament titles.

Monday night, the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team defeated Notre Dame 59-44, breaking its own all-time record win streak of 70 games set from November 9, 2001 through March 11, 2003, which had been the longest ever recorded in the women’s game and 18 games short of the all-time men’s basketball record (88 in a row) set by Coach John Wootens UCLA Bruins from 1971-74.

Tuesday night, the Huskies added one more notch in their championship belt, it was a little rough in the opening minutes as they toyed with West Virginia for the first  half and a few minutes into the second half. They then went on a tirade pressing hard on D and a incredible offensive run of 27 to 4  , effectively killing the Mountaineers 60-32, winning the Big East tournament championship,  again all accomplished under the appreciation and watchfull home town crowd at the XL Center in Hartford.
Theirs no telling how far they can go, number 72 and still counting  the Lady Huskies are so far above the rest of their peers in women’s college basketball that it would take a complete collapse on their part in a particular game for any team to have a chance to defeat them tey are certainly my pick for the big dance the remainder of this season in the NCAA tournament and perhaps for all of next season as well. Who’s going to beat them? They can only beat themselves, and that’s not likely to happen anytime soon with Geno at the helm.

Even LeBron James of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers is impressed. “To keep that kind of momentum is, whew, impressive,” said James.

UConn’s head coach Geno Auriemma, already in the Hall of Fame, is somewhat taken aback by the magnitude of the accomplishment.

“It will probably take me a couple of days for it to sink in, and then I’ll probably say, ‘Wow, that’s unreal.’”

But the real question is whether or not UConn’s absurd dominance of the game is good or bad for women’s college basketball.

Auriemma was asked that question and responded by saying, “I think it’s both. On one hand, it draws a lot of attention to our game. On the other hand, I don’t think it’s a good thing that we’re routinely beating other teams by 40 or 50 points per game.”
